ABOUT US
New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation (Federation) has been an active sport organisation since 1990. The Federation was initially recognised by Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) in 2007 as the National Sport Organisation (NSO) for Chinese martial arts, and in 2009 we were further recognised by the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) as an ‘Associate Member’ under Section 9 (9.9) of the NZOC Constitution. As of March 2025, the Federation is in the process of applying for NSO recognition/re-recognition due to changes to SportNZ criteria introduced in October 2024.
The Federation is the peak governing body for "all recognised and recognisable forms of modern (sport) kungfu-wushu (taolu and sanda), traditional kung-fu, tai chi (including modified tai chi such as that designed for falls prevention and rehabilitation), and health related Chinese arts such as qi-gong."
The Federation has maintained its status as New Zealand’s sole official representative to the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) since 1990 and to the Oceania Kung-Fu Wushu Federation (OWUF) since 1998. IWUF is the world leading organisation-governing body for the development and promotion of all forms of sport and traditional Kung-Fu/Wushu (Chinese martial arts).
The evolution of New Zealand Wushu has seen it hold 3 different naming conventions:
1. The Wellington Region Chinese Martial Arts Association Incorporated (WRCMAA)
2. The New Zealand Chinese Martial Arts-International Wushu Council Incorporated (NZCMA-IWC)
3. The New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation Incorporated (NZKWF) - current legal name
NZKWF also has as 'short titles': Kung-Fu Wushu New Zealand; Wushu New Zealand; New Zealand Wushu; and Federation.
