ABOUT the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation Inc. (NZKWF) International Status The New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation (NZKWF), first known as the Wellington Region Chinese Martial Arts Association was among the 31 countries and territories present at the inaugural meeting of the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), founded on 3 October 1990 in Beijing China. Glen Keith represented New Zealand at the meeting. NZKWF has maintained its status as New Zealand’s only representative to IWUF for the last 18 years. All the effort of its members has been, and is still, on a voluntary basis. The IWUF has current membership of 114 countries and territories across the 5 Continental Federations of Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Oceania. Wushu received official recognition from the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) in 1994. The IWUF was officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1999. The IWUF currently hosts four (4) major international bi-annual wushu sports events on consecutive years. These events are considered to be the pinnacle achievement for elite kung-fu wushu athletes. Through the efforts of IWUF and its continental federations and members, wushu is also an officially recognized sport in the Asian, East Asian, South Asian and South East Asian Games and is currently seeking inclusion in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World GAISF Martial Arts Games, World Games and the World Sport For All Games. National Status The New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation has undergone several stages of evolution as it has matured into a government recognised National Sport Organization (NSO) by Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC). The dates and organisations below depict the evolution of the NZKWF and significant historical development of wushu in New Zealand and Oceania, since the formation of the IWUF in 1990.
